If you had asked people at the time what they expected the arrival of a king to look like, the answer would have been very different from what actually happened. They would have imagined power. Visibility. Recognition.
Instead, Jesus came quietly. Unexpectedly. In a way that didn’t match what people thought it should be. And because of that, many didn’t recognize what God was doing. That tension runs all throughout the Christmas story. God was fulfilling His promise—but not in the way people anticipated. And the same is often true in our own lives.
We have expectations of how things should unfold.
How quickly answers should come.
What purpose should look like.
Different, But Better
Sometimes it looks smaller than we expected.
Sometimes it unfolds more slowly.
Sometimes it comes through circumstances we wouldn’t have chosen.
The Christmas story reminds us that just because something doesn’t look the way we imagined doesn’t mean God isn’t in it. In fact, He may be working in ways that are deeper, more intentional, and more meaningful than we could have planned ourselves. The question becomes: are we willing to recognize it?
Because sometimes the greatest work God is doing is happening in places we almost overlook.
